Ryo Misaki (三崎 竜, Misaki Ryō) is an abyssal-rank demon slayer in Alcyon Corporation's offense division. She is the supervisor for Ichika Sasaki's team, and occasionally goes on missions with them.

Appearance

Misaki is a tall woman with dark eyes. Her long brown hair is tied into a low ponytail, and she has spiky bangs which frame her face. Her most noticeable physical feature is a patch of mutated red flesh on the left side of her face, which replaces the ear, most of the cheek, and part of the lower jaw. Her mouth on that side is forced open into a permanent leer with visible pointed teeth. Two red fins with yellow tips protrude from the mutated flesh, positioned horizontally like a jagged extension of the lips. The mutation forces her left eye into a partial squint at all times.

She wears the standard Alcyon Corporation uniform, except with brown slacks. Her tie is kept in place with a gold double-bar tie pin. She also wears black leather gloves, and a black longcoat with an orange inner lining. During missions, she dons a respirator mask, which has a red facepiece and a black and yellow rim.

Personality

Misaki is a kind, reliable, and well-respected senior within the offense division. She cares greatly about her subordinates, and sees it as her responsibility to protect them until they can grow into their own. When supervising missions, she prefers to hang back and let the others gain practical experience. However, if they are in danger of being seriously hurt or killed, she will not hesitate to intervene.

Partly due to training to use her mare more effectively, Misaki observes, thinks, and makes decisions at a lightning pace. She can take in the state of a complex battle in an instant, and find the best course of action. This applies even outside of combat, and during conversations she sometimes blurts out non-sequiturs instead of explaining her thought process.

When it comes to her demon-slaying work, she is very utilitarian, bordering on ruthless. Although she understands why others may feel sympathy for the demons they eliminate, she tries to discourage this mindset as it will lead to more human casualties in the long run. As a high-ranked officer, she knows about many of Alcyon Corporation's unethical dealings, but remains loyal to them because she believes their presence helps people more than it hurts. Hiro Nimura and several others have compared this aspect of her personality to Ichika.

Since the shape of her mouth is heavily mutated, Misaki's speech is slightly slurred when she isn't wearing her mask (which digitally filters her voice to make it more understandable). The fact that other characters have trouble understanding her is occasionally played for comedy.

History

As a teenager, Misaki was possessed by a hadal-rank demon. She was successfully exorcised by an Alcyon Corporation agent, but not before her body was mutated in several places. Most of the mutations were successfully corrected through surgery, but the one on her face was deemed too large and too close to her brain to safely excise.

In her early twenties, Misaki joined Alcyon Corporation in order to prevent her situation from happening to other people. Her dedication and hard work allowed her to rise through the ranks.

A few months prior to the start of the story, Misaki took an interest in Ichika, seeing her as a promising rookie who could do great things if she was pushed in the right direction. She became Ichika's supervisor, and began searching for teammates who might push her to excel.

Powers & Abilities

Mare

Hundred-Eyes is a sensory-type mare, which grants Misaki the ability to predict the outcomes of potential actions before taking them. This is visually represented by "ghosts": translucent versions of herself that only she can see. These ghosts act out the potential actions and consequences in the span of a split second, and Misaki can then choose whether or not to take that course of action based on the prediction.

Hundred-Eyes is most effective on actions that Misaki is actively planning and considering. It can also warn her of actions her opponents will take against her, but only when she is actively focused on them, so sneak attacks are still possible. Although she can preview several actions at a time, she must actively think of each course of action before she can see the corresponding ghost. This means it's possible to "run out the clock" by putting her in a sufficiently bad situation, thus forcing her to make a suboptimal decision.

Mantle

Hundred-Eyes: Omukade is a shift-type mantle. While active, centipede-like strips of armor wrap around Misaki's neck, arms, and legs. She can control these at will, commanding them to extend in order to attack or defend.

While Omukade is active, the ghosts become visible to everyone, and their nature changes. Rather than being potential futures, they all happen at the same time in a state of quantum superposition, until Misaki chooses her preferred outcome and collapses it. For example, she could command her centipede armor to attack from multiple directions at once; once one attack successfully hits, she can choose that outcome and all the other ghosts would disappear.
