Humans are a sapient race which inhabit reality. They have a unique connection to oneirosea, which is stronger than any other animal's.

Overview

Humans in the Oneirosea series are broadly similar to those of the real world in terms of appearance and biology. However, due to advanced technology, they have access to more personal appearance modification options. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see humans with unusual colorations, biomodded attachments such as horns or strangely shaped ears, and even cybernetic enhancements.

In addition to their intelligence and technological advances, humans are notable for having extremely complex dreams and worries, which allows them to produce mist and gives them a strong connection to oneirosea. Their dreams influence the dimension's appearance and behavior. Unfortunately, this also opens their souls up to influence from the opposite direction, making humans susceptible to being possessed by demons.

Powers & Abilities

Most humans can only produce very small amounts of mist, and they do not have any conscious control over their influence on oneirosea. However, some naturally have the ability to hold more mist within their bodies, while others are granted this ability by overexposure to oneirosea, such as through recurring dreams or possession by a demon. As such, these people have the potential to develop powers.

In rare cases involving exceptionally powerful humans, these powers can develop spontaneously. However, most people with powers had them artificially awakened by ingesting a demon cell. The media has given humans with powers a variety of nicknames, including espers, dream-touched, and metahumans. Those who work for Alcyon Corporation are called divers.

Mares

Human unique powers are known as mares. They are manifestations of the users' dreams.

Astral Projection

Astral projection is a technique that allows a human to project their soul into oneirosea while awake for research or scouting purposes.

Dreaming

A human's connection to oneirosea is strongest when they dream. Most dreams only produce mist, but longer and more vivid dreams cause the human's soul to temporarily detach from its body and drift into oneirosea.

While in oneirosea, the soul remains connected to its body through a spiritual construct known as a tether. Once the dream ends, the soul travels back through this tether and into its body.

Mental World

Each human's soul contains a personalized mental world. During a vivid dream, their soul projects its mental world around itself, usually in a spherical shape. The objects and places within the dream appear inside the mental world. The soul can explore this mental world freely, but cannot exit it. While it is possible to dream about travelling long distances, in this case the soul actually remains stationary while the mental world changes around it.

Beings in oneirosea can enter an active mental world simply by physically walking into it. A demon that successfully infiltrates a mental world and reaches the dreaming soul can swim through its tether and possess its body in reality, becoming a changeling. However, they may be impeded by the contents of the dream - both by physical obstacles and enemies, and by "rules" which make the mental world function differently than reality.

It is speculated that domains work by externalizing the mental world while the user is awake. However, this theory is difficult to verify, as there are no reliable methods of entering a human's mental world when they are not dreaming.
