Appearance
In their shell, Hidari is a dark-skinned diel of average height. The left side of their hair is purple and kept short in a sidecut, with rectangular patterns shaved into it. The right side of their hair is a dark brown, styled in rectangular-looking locs. Their eyes are mismatched: the left has a blue sclera and white iris, while the right is reversed.
They wear the standard Alcyon Corporation uniform, minus the tie. Over it, they wear a cropped two-tone purple and blue jacket. They're usually seen with the left sleeve rolled up to expose their hand while the right sleeve drapes over their fingers.
Hidari specifically requested a shell with less flexibility to resemble their original body; as such, the texture of their skin is harder than average, and they tend to move stiffly, only outwardly expressing their emotions through their eyes. Some visible seams run across their skin, including one across their face and the bridge of their nose. Their bar code is under this seam on the left side.
Demon Form
In their demon form, Hidari is roughly humanoid in overall shape. The right side of their body is made of a dark blue, shell-like material. They have one leg and half a face, and a large arm or wing shaped like a scallop shell protruding from the side of their body. Inside the shell is a mass of red tube-like tentacles that split into multiple at the ends, one of which serves as another leg, and two more of which are held higher up like arms.
They have one eye on each side: their right eye is in the shell in the same position as a human eye, while their left eye is on the tip of a tentacle emerging from the head. Both have alternating rings of blue and white colors, but in different orders.
Personality
In general, Hidari is a shy person who prefers to watch from the sidelines rather than participate. Their lack of confidence makes them an easy target for bullies; during their time in the Inverted Castle, the other demons looked down on them and often tricked them into performing demeaning tasks. Perhaps due to these experiences, they are perceptive when it comes to people, especially on the subject of hierarchies. When faced with a new group, they can quickly identify the person who calls the shots, even if this is different from the stated leader, and what they need to do to appease this person.
They greatly fear any kind of pain or punishment, and put a lot of effort into avoiding it. They are quick to discard their own dignity if it would keep them safe, and can be threatened into going against their own morals without much difficulty. At times, this makes them come off as shallow or disloyal. They are so used to prioritizing survival that when they're free to make their own decisions without external pressure, they struggle to understand what they want for themselves.
History
There used to be a single demon named Ventriculosa, who was in the Changeling Invasion faction. This demon decided to split itself into two demons: the new Ventriculosa and a smaller, nameless one (Hidari). Ventriculosa believed themselves to be the original demon, who initiated the split in order to purge its weak traits from itself. Hidari expresses doubt about this theory based on their own inherited memories, but admits that they will never fully know the original Ventriculosa's intentions with it gone.
Ventriculosa continued to support the faction after the split, and enthusiastically supported the plan to cause trouble for Alcyon Corporation. Hidari disagreed and wanted to leave, but Ventriculosa would not allow this, and coerced them into staying and running errands for the faction instead. The other demons quickly realized they were easy to manipulate and joined in. By the infiltration arc, Hidari had been in this situation for several years and resigned themselves to this existence.
Powers & Abilities
Vent: Hidari's shell has two vents: one on the left side of their forehead, and one on their left arm. Both of these slots can release their demon form's tube appendages. Their time limit is about 10 minutes.
Average Mist Capacity: Hidari was a sunlight-rank demon before becoming a diel, giving them decent mist reserves and an innate knowledge of how to use them. Their aura is purplish-grey.
Limited Shapeshifting: Hidari can stretch their tentacles by a few meters without straining them. This can be used to restrain enemies or maneuver more freely. Additionally, they have the ability to manifest their left eye at the tip of any tentacle, so they can use this ability to scout around corners without being seen.
Energy Beams: Hidari can shoot mist energy out of the tips of their tentacles. While it is possible to use this ability offensively, as Ventriculosa shows, Hidari more often uses it to propel themselves by shooting in the opposite direction.
Wake: As a diel, Hidari is expected to develop a unique power eventually, but seems to be slower than most diels in this respect. This may be related to their weak sense of personal identity, being focused more on self-preservation than any unique goals or hobbies.
Trivia
- Hidari simply means "left". Hiro Nimura gave them this nickname, referring to the fact that their tentacles are on the left side of their body (in contrast to Ventriculosa's right).
